Our proposal for a primary school in south Senegal builds on concept of Giving and Taking. In which spaces can be used for school as well as community purposes which allows both of them to grow together. A school where the local community helps to build the school together, and the school gives back the carved-out spaces for community use. On the other hand, teachers give education in classroom and after children take knowledge from each other by interacting in varied designed spaces, allowing them to explore their own potential themselves.
The school form is creating playful spaces, in which classrooms are organised in rectangular form and gardern are in semi-circular form. It creates an interactive balance between indoor and outdoor spaces, Blurring the lines between education which children need, and the lifestyle children want.
The school feels closed from the outside but open form the inside, which makes spaces psychologically safe and children can use the spaces as they want. The central rectangular courtyard is a space of interaction of multiple activities like eating, playing, studying, farming and discovering these activities help children in increasing their creativity, intelligence and health bars. In the central courtyard, the circular space under the tree is used as an open classroom which expressing the thought of learning requires no boundries. A private garden attached to each space filters the dust from the wind from the outside and reduces the inside temprature of the building. The courtyard trees and shrubs give diffused and reflected sunlight in classroom areas making a more pleasant learning experience.
